Over the weekend Wimberley hosted their boys and girls varsity only Hoopfest tournament. Both of the Texans teams were able to make it to the championship game however both would come up short in the final game to take second place in the tournament.

On Thursday the men’s team started off the tournament with a 66-54 win over The Lockhart Lions and then immediately followed that win up with another 64-53 win over TOHS. The following day The Texans came to the tournament needing two big wins to make the championship game the next day. With the first game against The Northern Oaks Griffins The Texans were able to take the game with their biggest win of the tournament at 20 points with a final score of 73-53.

Building off that win the Texans then took on The Navarro Vikings and completely dominated the whole game winning 73-25. In their last game the Texans were given a free win as Marble Falls forfeited the game giving the Texans a perfect 5-0 record going into the final game. With these four wins and the free win, The Texans solidified their spot in the championship game against The East View Patriots (17-5).

Everyone was in for a good game as both teams came into the finals undefeated and looked to stay that way with one final game left. In the first quarter the Patriots came out strong taking a 7 point lead after the first eight minutes of the game. In the second The Texans were able to slow them down a little, only giving up 13 points, however the Texans weren’t able to get anything going and got outscored in both quarters of the first half now trailing by ten at 35-25. In the third quarter The Patriots came out where they left off outscoring the Texans in a massive third quarter to take a commanding 18 point lead. In the 4th The Texans were able to bring it back to single digits in a huge last quarter push that brought the stadium to life, however the lead was too big and with The Patriots hitting some clutch shots down the stretch The Texans ended up losing 78-58 taking home second place in their Hoopfest tournament.

“I thought it was a good tournament for us,” Head Coach Mike Witten said. “I thought we played well, at 4-1 and then the forfeit win. I was happy and proud of them. We ran up against a team that had a little more size and athleticism and we weren’t too sure how to handle that, but we have to get ready for that because it’s coming in district and playoffs. I am tough and I expect everything and they gave me that. They did good” Sophomore guard Paul Gumbert led the team all weekend long with 100 points on the tournament averaging 20 a game.
