In conjunction with the Winter-Nights Showcase, Wimberley’s Susan Gibson will host a Singer-Songwriter Workshop on January 10 at the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens.
Writers, as well as people who want to learn about the process of crafting a song are invited to attend. Five seasoned musicians will offer their knowledge and encouragement: Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines, Brennen Leigh, Jaimee Harris and Susan Gibson.
“Every instructor in our workshop has the heart of a teacher, Gibson said. “Lloyd Maines and Terry Hendrix, in particular, have done a great deal of teaching.”
“Some of what we will cover will be how to articulate what, for most of us, is so instinctual. We’ll talk about inspiration and how to get our creative antennas up. We’ll show how to get a good idea and flesh it out into a song. While none of us can tell you how to write your song, we can tell you how we write ours. As a writer we can craft what we’re saying through images, power verbs, structure and form.”
“We want writers to take inspiration from other creatives along the way and to build a community that sustains them. We want them to know that no song is ever written in a vacuum.”
For people who have never written anything, she said, this workshop is for them, too.
“Bring what you know about something you love, in whatever art form it may exist. We welcome anyone who ever appreciated a song and wondered how the artist got there. Talent is not just a god-given talent, but a prolonged interest in something.”
The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and costs $160 for four hours of instruction. A box lunch is included in the fee. The EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens is located at 1101 FM 2325 in Wimberley. To reserve your place, send an email to booking@susangibson. com.
