Baseball starts season with a big win

The Wimberley Texans baseball team opened up the 2022 season this week with a road trip to La Grange and traveled to Liberty Hill to play in the Liberty Hill High School Tournament.

The Wimberley Texans baseball team opened up the 2022 season this week with a road trip to La Grange and traveled to Liberty Hill to play in the Liberty Hill High School Tournament.

Texans finished the 2021 season with a 19-11-2 record including finishing second in the district following a thrilling second-place tiebreaker game against Boerne which saw the Texans knock off the Greyhounds 3-2.

Wimberley followed the win up with a two game sweep of the La Vernia Bears in the playoffs to capture the Bi-District Championship before falling to Sweeny in the Area round.

The Texans opened the season on the road as they traveled to La Grange to battle the Leopards.

It was a blowout victory for the Texans as Wimberley connected for 17 hits and 19 runs for a 19-7 win over La Grange.

Lane Patek and Ethan Lancaster led the team in offense with Patek going 3-4 at the plate with one RBI and Lancaster going 2-3 with three RBIs.

The Texans then made a trip to Liberty Hill to participate in the Liberty Hill High School Tournament opening with Copperas Cove.

Against the Bulldogs, Wimberley kept Copperas Cove bats off the board for the majority of the game while the Texan bats kept their hot streak alive en route to a 12-2 win.

Patek, Dylan Kincaid, and Kerrick Lai lead all hitter with two RBIs apiece with Chase Carson making a splash with a leadoff triple in the second inning.

Ruger Riojas got the win as the starting pitcher going five innings while allowing just six hits, two runs along with eight strikeouts while Carson closed out the game in the sixth inning.

Wimberley played for the second time that day as they squared off with the Kerrville Tivy Antlers.

The Texan bats were cooled off by the Antlers as Tivy scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to add on to their 3-2 lead on the way to a 5-2 win for the Antlers.

Patek tallied the only RBI for the Texans driving in Hagen Donley in the first inning while Colby Gold stole home following a dropped third strike.

Will Norris took the loss after allowing three runs in the first while Ryan Slade closed out throwing in 5 2-3 innings allowing just four hits with eight strikeouts.

Texans bounced back from the loss to Kerrville and were able to defeat the Whitehouse Wildcats the next day in a 5-4 win for Wimberley.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Texans scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead en route to the win.

Landon Gary took the mound for the Texans going seven innings while allowing just four hits, two earned runs and throwing three strikeouts.

Wimberley finished up the tournament against the Temple Wildcats on Saturday.

The Texans were unable to overcome a seven run first inning by the Wildcats as Temple went on to win 10-3.

With Wimberley at a 3-2 record, the Texans return home to play in the Texan Classic Tournament here in Wimberley Ballpark.

The Texans will play a double-header on Thursday battling St. Michaels at 10:15 a.m. then Lutheran South Academy at 2:4 p.m..

Friday will see Wimberley take on highly touted Stephenville at 7:15 p.m. before playing Iowa Park Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
