Students win Moreman Memorial Scholarships

Robert Moreman worked behind the scenes to support the community he called home, volunteering with several local nonprofit organizations during the 10 years he lived in Wimberley. In his honor, the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance created a scholarship in 2021 to provide opportunities for budding artists and tradespeople. Every year, the Robert Moreman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to deserving students who are passionate about their creative endeavors.

This year, those deserving students were Maci Land, Azula Hunter Thiam and Kinbe Perez.

The scholarship committee looks for candidates who are dedicated to their craft, whether it be in the visual, performing, literary, or culinary arts, or any of the building trades. Eligibility is open to students graduating from Wimberley High School and Katherine Anne Porter School, and new this year, students home schooled in the 78676 zip code or students who have taken a gap year. The scholarship is offered to those wanting to continue their education at a community college, four-year university, or a skills-based trade school.

This scholarship has allowed young artists to pursue their dreams of creating meaningful works of art and skilled trades students to develop their talents in construction and design. The committee provides a minimum of $5,000 per scholarship; a recent scholarship recipient referred to the funds she received as “life changing.”

Moreman’s family, friends and other financial donors have helped make local students’ dreams come true.

“The Robert Moreman Memorial Scholarship for Arts and Building Trade Students reminds us that even in our darkest moments, we can and should find the strength to create something beautiful, meaningful and enduring,” one WVACA representative commented.

Tax deductible donations are now being accepted through Dec. 31 for the awards presentation in May of 2024. If you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, visit wimberleyarts. org and click on the “Scholarships” tab.
