WAG’s 2023 gala deemed the ‘best yet’

The Wimberley Adoption Group and Rescue had plenty of things to celebrate at their 2023 gala. Not only did their enthusiasts come out in strong support of their mission to rescue and find homes for dispossessed dogs and puppies, but they also celebrated their 2,000th adoption. The Palmer family was the lucky recipient of “Corndog,” who had the distinction of being the milestone adoption.

Some weeks earlier and unbeknownst to Corndog, young Starling Palmer presented his parents with a Power Point presentation titled, “Why We Should Adopt a Dog.” He must have presented a compelling case because his parents agreed and the process to adopt began. It turned out to be a happy milestone for everyone involved.

With cooler weather ahead, WAG Rescue will again host adoption events at different locations around town. On November 18, from 1 - 4 p.m., they are hosting a clinic at the former Scudder Elementary School in partnership with Prevent a Litter. Known by its acronym, PALS, the group does low cost spays and neuters, microchipping and other procedures.

WAG began its mission in 2009 and by 2011 their shop, “Treasures on Twelve,” opened to provide an income stream for their work. In 2012, the first WAG gala was held and in 2016, the group acquired the property that became their refuge for stray, sick and abandoned dogs. By 2018, they reached their 1,000th adoption.

In 2019 they completed work on the puppy nursery and by the next year, renovations to the refuge were complete. In 2021 they were able to satisfy the mortgage on the property and call it their own. By 2023, they celebrated the adoption of Corndog to the Palmer family, as their 2,000th placement since opening their doors in 2009.

Not only has WAG opened its wallets to create an important resource for the Wimberley Valley, but it has also become a leader in animal rescue during a time when crowded shelters are at a crisis stage in Texas. They greatly expanded their fostering program to help ease the strain on regional shelters.

WAG was founded by Debbie Nordyke and Patricia Davis, who continues to serve as its Executive Director. For more information about volunteering, adopting and fostering, go to wimberleywagrescue. org.
