Following a tough loss to Davenport, The Lady Texans Volleyball team came out without missing a beat sweeping both Bandera and Boerne in straight sets.
After beating the Bandera Bulldogs 3 sets to none the first time around in district, Wimberley came out ready for a tough matchup.
“Playing in the second round (Of districts) you always have to work on not trying to be complacent with somebody that you beat the first time around so when we play them we always have to make sure we are finding a new way to play against them.” Head Coach Stephanie Barthals said.
The Wimberley Texans took the first set 25-7 as it looked like they could do no wrong.
Set two was a little closer but still saw Wimberley in the driver seat early on as they were putting on a serving clinic with 5 aces early in the second set. The Bulldogs managed to fight back making set two a little too close for comfort. With a big play needed #8 Kenslee Brown had an important kill late in the match giving them all the momentum they needed to close out the second set 25-17. “I love these girls, I do, we’re all really close,” Brown said. “Last year we were a newer, younger team, so we’re connecting a lot better this year.”
Set 3 in where it got a little interesting as late in the set after a few hitting errors The Texans found themselves with their smallest lead of the game at 19-16. After Coach Barthels called a timeout the Texans played hard and smart, racking up three kills and letting three spikes go out of bounds on the defensive side, taking the third set 25-20 and completing the sweep.
“People walk in our gym and see our state banners,” Coach Barthels said. “We have a name of Wimberley Volleyball and it’s known, so some people get a little nervous when they come into this gym. I think tonight was one of those nights.”
The Wimberley Texans Volleyball team will look to add to those banners this year, “We’re going to state” Barthels said.
The following Friday the Texans made their way out to Boerne to take on the Greyhounds for the second time in district play. The first time around The Texans swept The Greyhounds 3-0 and this game would see history repeat as the Texans swept them 3-0.
The Texans came out in the opening set firing on all cylinders as they took it 25-6.
“I don’t know why but we always play better on the road.” Barthels said.
After the first set The Greyhounds found their groove and made the second set a competitive one finding themselves in a close match late in the set, however, The Texans were able to pull away and win the second set 25-20.
In the third set Wimberley found themselves taking it pretty comfortably as they won 25-17 and completed the 3-0 sweep giving them back to back sweeps for the week.
The Texans will face Cuero at home this Tuesday for a non district match in what is going to be a highly anticipated game as Wimberley now sits at 28-7 and Cuero finds themselves at 28-10.
