Wim. Valley Big Band still in their groove

On the heels of a successful fund-raising dinner and concert at the end of September, the Wimberley Valley Big Band will perform a free, family- friendly outdoor concert, aptly entitled “Groovin’ on the Square” from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.

On the heels of a successful fund-raising dinner and concert at the end of September, the Wimberley Valley Big Band will perform a free, family- friendly outdoor concert, aptly entitled “Groovin’ on the Square” from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The WVBB is well known for their always entertaining concerts featuring their extensive repertoire of light jazz, dance tunes, swing, and pop music. The welcoming venue sports a concrete dance floor, and the band will give dancers plenty of opportunities to show off their hoofing skills. The outside site offers “choose your own spot” seating on the grassy area, therefore a lawn chair or picnic blanket is necessary. Also, the backyard venue allows food and drink, including adult beverages, to be brought into the concert grounds.

Their September dinner, concert and dance billed as “Wine & Unwind (& Dine)” was just one of the WVBB’s fund-raising efforts specifically benefiting the band’s newly formed music scholarship program.

According to a recent post on social media by keyboardist and vocalist, Pat Gillory, “The Wimberley Valley Big Band’s wonderful evening at the beautiful Wimberley Valley Winery was a huge success. A large crowd of listeners sat under the huge sprawling oaks and enjoyed the band’s musical offerings while sipping beverages produced by the winery. The concert was cut short by the approach of a lightning storm that brought some areas of Hays County a brief shower.

Before the concert, a group of Big Band supporters dined in style inside the winery’s tastefully appointed Tap Room for a catered meal in support of the band’s scholarship fund for the 2023–2024 school year. Thanks to the generosity of the Wimberley Valley Winery and Chef John Sanderson’s excellent cuisine, the WVBB added several thousand scholarship dollars to the fund, which offers scholarships to graduating Wimberley High School students who are entering into advanced musical education. Interested students are urged to fill out an application for the scholarship at wimberleyvalleybigband. org/scholarship- form. “Groovin’ on the Square” will be held behind the former Cypress Creek Café at 320 Wimberley Square just off of RR 12. Free parking is available in the Public Parking lot on Oak Drive, across from the venue.
