The gift of temperate weather greeted revelers for the fifth annual Wimberley Pride Parade. Hundreds of citizens marched and lined the parade route from the Oak Park & Welcome Center, through the square, across RR 12 and down Old Kyle Road displaying rainbow flags and other rainbow- themed apparel to show their support for the LGBTQIA+ community. The parade ended at 280 Old Kyle Road at the site of the new Visitor Information Center, which remains under renovation.
The Queen of Ceremony, Brianna St. James, rode the parade route in a modified Honda Pioneer UTV by Tina Terrian called “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” inspired by an Australian film of the same name.
Invited speakers David Martin, Founder of Wimberley Pride and Mandy Giles, Founder of Parents for Trans Youth addressed the crowd. St. James made a few brief remarks before leaving due to an unexpected family emergency. Dancing and music by DJ Kira Light followed.
The Wimberley Pride group reported earlier in the week that Pride flags flying over the Wimberley square had been stolen. The city of Wimberley filed appropriate reports with the Hays County Sheriff’s Department who is investigating.
Pre-Pride March events began earlier in the week with mixers at Middleton Brewery, Leaning Pear and Savages. After-March parties were held at Community Pizza and Longleaf Craft Kitchen + Bar.
