WISD welcomes back students for the new year

Wimberley ISD will start back up this coming week, kicking its 2023– 2024 year off with a number of back-toschool events.

Wimberley ISD will start back up this coming week, kicking its 2023– 2024 year off with a number of back-toschool events.

Both elementary schools will host meet-the-teacher nights on Aug. 14. Danforth Junior High will host its sixth grade and new student orientation on Aug. 10, and Wimberley High School will hold its freshman fish camp the same day.

The new year also comes with a few changes for district students, including school start and end times.

“The changes allow for our transportation department to pick up students at [Jacob’s Well Elementary] first in the afternoon, then arrive at [Blue Hole Primary], increasing efficiency and reducing the amount of time our youngest students are on the bus,” WISD said in a statement.

Meanwhile, safety and safety improvements are also being enacted on campus, with a number of projects having taken place over the summer.

“Fencing projects were installed at JWE and Danforth, and security window film was installed at all four campuses,” the district stated. “In addition, JWE will welcome a new School Resource Officer as Ashley Guerra of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office assumes SRO duties fulltime. All four WISD campuses will have a full-time SRO on duty, just as they did when last school year ended.”

The district will also be enforcing stricter vaping rules, thanks to House Bill 114.

“With the new law, students possessing or using vaping devices or vaping accessories on school premises or during school-related activities and events will result in a mandatory Disciplinary Alternative Education Program placement,” the district explained. “This new law requires WISD to make the DAEP placement regardless of whether the vape contains THC/marijuana or not. WISD encourages our parents to have a conversation with your student( s) to ensure that these items are not brought onto campus.”
