The post office’s secret garden

When visiting the Wimberley Post Office, take a few minutes to enjoy the beautiful landscaping, especially the wildflowers in the bed out front.

Over 15 different varieties of native Texas wildflowers are now blooming there. Bluebonnets still hang on alongside the Mexican hats that are usually one of the last wildflowers to show their beauty. The bed will probably continue to flourish for years to come, as the wildflowers are replenished when they are done blooming and go to seed.

The postmaster said the beds were prettier a couple of weeks ago when the bluebonnets were in full bloom, but they continue to remain impressive. The beds are not watered regularly, but instead, they depend on rain and sun to flourish. Likely because of the spring rains in the area this year, the beds are still blooming and beautiful.

The beds next to the building are filled with larger natives such as Texas sage, yaupon holly, wild petunias and a variety of ground covers. It is rare to see a post office with such beautiful native plants thriving on their own.

If you have an opportunity to gather wildflower seeds, save them until the fall and then rake an area in your yard, mix in some fresh soil and broadcast the seeds.
