Wimberley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6441, in observance of Armed Forces Day this Saturday, will host a free barbecue lunch for military service members and their families and local first responders.

Anyone now serving, or who has ever served, in any of the armed forces and their family members are invited to this, the fifth annual Wimberley Armed Forces Day observance. Present and past local first responders also are invited.

Serving times Saturday are from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the VFW Hall, located at 401 Jacobs Well Road in Wimberley. The meal will include barbecued brisket, chicken legs, sausage, potato salad and baked beans. Attendees have the option of dining in or carrying out.

Veterans service and assistance organizations will be present to assist veterans, family and survivors.

Armed Forces Day is a holiday for Americans worldwide to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. First conceived by President Harry S. Truman, the holiday was established in 1949 to replace the previous Army and Navy Days with a single day celebration for all five branches (now six) of the United States military. Today, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of every May, this year falling on May 20.
