The Wimberley Valley Big Band will present their next concert, “Stars & Stripes” on Saturday, May 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. at VFW Post #6441 on Jacob’s Well Road in Wimberley.
The evening’s program will feature music of WWII era big band greats such as Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. As with every WVBB event, an area will be set aside as a dance floor, and the big sounds of this musical lineup will provide a prime vehicle for dancing the night away.
The concert’s date was chosen in recognition of Armed Forces Day, which is nationally observed annually on the third Saturday of May. According to the VFW Post’s website, the day was first designated on August 31, 1949. Traditionally, Post #6441 celebrates the day by hosting a barbeque lunch for active service men and women and their family members in the Wimberley area. That luncheon is not a part of the WVBB’s nighttime event, but concert attendees can visit the Post’s concession for snacks and can BYOB.
WVBB Director Doug Gillory said, “The Wimberley Valley Big Band is excited to present this salute at the Wimberley VFW Hall. The ‘Stars and Stripes’ event will be saluting our service brothers and sisters, our veterans, and all service branches of the United States, especially our warriors. This will feature music from the past 1930’s and 1940’s. Music will include many selections from the Glenn Miller repertoire and other famous composers of the day. This concert is free and family friendly for our community.”
