Wimberley continues to make progress toward preservation of the city’s unique architectural character with a draft ordinance and public hearing at City Council’s May 18 regular meeting.
A third and final public input session on this initiative was held at City Hall on April 24. The meeting was attended by local property owners and other interested citizens, who engaged in a town hall format for questions and answers by both the audience and City Council Members.
The session kicked off with an overview by Ellis Mumford-Russell of Post Oak Preservation Consultants. The city engaged the group last year to create an approach to preserving Wimberley’s historic environment.
In her overview, Russell announced that a nomination for the National Historic Designation for downtown Wimberley has been submitted to the Texas Historic Commission. The commission will be reviewing and approving the nomination and is scheduling a public hearing in August in Wimberley as part of its review process. More information on this hearing will be announced by the commission at a later date.
Post Oak Preservation, along with the city council, is currently finalizing the boundaries of the designated historic district. The consultants are also completing the final draft of design guidelines for the downtown core historic district. The current draft and further information can be reviewed by the public at cityofwimberley. com/319/Historical- Preservation.
Additionally, the Texas Historical Commission will be sending a notification letter to those property owners located in the target area.
Post Oak Preservation is well-known in Texas for its work in historic preservation initiatives in cities throughout the state, including San Antonio and Georgetown.
