WVACA brings new concert series to Wimberley Valley

The Stars Over Wimberley Benefit Concert Series is a new collaboration between two local nonprofit organizations: the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance and The Wimberley Players.

The Stars Over Wimberley Benefit Concert Series is a new collaboration between two local nonprofit organizations: the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance and The Wimberley Players.

The collaborative new program has been created to support WVACA’s Robert Moreman Memorial Scholarship Program for creative graduating Wimberley-area high school seniors, while showcasing Texas musical artists and bringing cultural enrichment to the Wimberley community. Its inaugural concert, scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, features renowned singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves with Sam Downing opening.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the 100seat Wimberley Players’ theater at 450 Old Kyle Road in Wimberley. General reserved seats are $50. Tickets are on sale now.

Americana-folk songwriter, humorist and poignant storyteller, Cleaves delivers songs that strike people’s hearts and become part of their lives. At the concert, Slaid will sing songs from his recently released recording, “Together Through the Dark.” This recording, as producer Scrappy Jud Newcomb says, “… speaks to the hopeful, the hard working, the battered, confused, and the sad. But above all to the believers in the city of freedom that we heard in the stories of our youth and all those FM radio hits.” Stars Over Wimberley plans to present four to six concerts a year to support the scholarship fund.

The full lineup for 2023 includes four concerts at the Wimberley Players’ theatre: • Slaid Cleaves — Wednesday, May 17, 7:30 p.m.

• Ruthie Foster — Wednesday, July 12, 7:30 p.m.

• Alejandro Escovedo — Wednesday, Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m.

• Sarah Jarosz — Wednesday, Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m.

The Robert Moreman Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in honor of Robert (Bobby) Duke Moreman (1962–2020), husband of WVACA founder and past president Cathy Moreman. WVACA awards these scholarships annually to graduating high school seniors from Wimberley High School and Katherine Anne Porter School. They are given to talented seniors who display exceptional talent and plan to continue their education in the creative arts: performing, visual, literary and culinary or (to honor Robert’s profession) in the building trades.
