Peace Like a River — Wimberley Community Chorus’s first full spring concert since COVID-19 canceled its 2020 spring season— will be presented May 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. and May 7 at 3 p.m. in Avey Hall of the Chapel in the Hills at 14601 RR 12 in Wimberley.
The concert brings songs of hope and unity that resonate with the valley’s deep connection with nature and living water. Under the direction of Craig Aamot of Texas State and with accompaniment from Pat Gillory, the chorus will sing music originally planned for its 40th anniversary in 2020. Selections will include “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon; “We are Made for Music,” originally commissioned by the Chorus from Joseph Martin; “Peace Like a River,” arranged by Mack Wilberg; and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Paul Simon. The chorus always spices it up with an international selection such as Thina Sonke, and they will also have a sing along.
Director Craig Aamot is recognized for his ability to weave a powerful thematic tapestry from both traditional and contemporary songs. Aamot joined the faculty at Texas State in 2013 and has led University Singers, Men’s Choir, Treble Choir and VocaLibre as well as lecturing in music literature and art history. Aamot comes to San Marcos from Wisconsin, where he led one of the largest high school choral programs in the Midwest. His choirs have performed at state and regional ACDA conventions, National Intercollegiate Men’s Choir Association convention and throughout the US, Italy, Spain, France, China, Australia and Ireland.
Aamot is active as a clinician, with recent appointments at the Anchorage Choral Festival (Canada), the International Choral Festival in Sydney (Australia) and the Craig Hella Johnson Choral Festival in Dublin and Belfast (Ireland). In addition to his work at Texas State, Aamot leads one of the premier quarterback development summer programs in the country.
