The Wimberley Valley Museum is throwing an old-fashioned pie social this week, complete with a pie competition, hot dogs, music and ponies.
The event will run on Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All activities will take place on the museum grounds located between the Community Center and the museum at 14068 RR12.
The pie competition will cover five different categories: fruit, cream, nut, specialty and kids. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each category. A grand prize for best pie will receive a special award, and all winning pies will be auctioned. Pie entry forms are available at wimwic. org or at the Wimberley Valley Visitors Center. Pies submitted for judging need to arrive at the Community Center between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. the day of.
A pie-eating contest will also take place, along with music provided by Erik Hokkanen and Will Webster.
Mini Equine 2U will have two of their therapy ponies in attendance for requisite hugs, and FreedomCanines will be showing a few of their trained service dogs. Additional family-friendly fun and activities will also be available.
For over 32 years, the Annual Pie Social has been a beloved Wimberley tradition. Attendance is free, and all funds raised from selling pies and hot dogs will go directly to the museum.
The two houses that make up the Wimberley Valley Museum are the Winters-Wimberley House (built in 1857) and the Wimberley- Hughes House (built in 1877). Both are listed on the Texas Register of Historic Places and are governed by the nonprofit Wimberley Institute of Cultures, which fosters interest in the historical, architectural, natural and cultural resources of the Wimberley Valley through educational and social programs. Using the museum, WIC helps to educate the public on the history of the Wimberley Valley area.
The pie social is one way WIC works to bring the community together in celebration of Wimberley. Like the Harvest Moon Dance in the fall, WIC sponsors activities that bring together the local community while also preserving the local heritage. Additional programs sponsored through WIC include fourth-grade class tours and scholarships for Wimberley High School seniors.
