Texan soccer enters potential turning point of the season

The Wimberley Texan soccer team is at a critical point in the season. This week marks the end of the first of two passes through each district team. After starting off the season on a long winning streak, the team has hit a rough patch.

“I asked the kids, ‘Do you think we are the team that started the season 8-0 or are we the team that is 2-5 in the last seven games?’” Head Coach Ramez Antoun said. “We’ve had some injuries and kids out of town, but I put it to them. It is a challenge to them to step up and maybe find a way to turn up their intensity and effort a bit. I’m not saying intensity and effort isn’t there. I’m just challenging them to dig a little deeper.”

The challenge came following two losses this week. The first loss was against the defending state champions in the Boerne Greyhounds.

“We hung with them for about 40 minutes,” Antoun said. “We were down three starters, and I think we just ran out of gas. The floodgates opened in the second half.”

Boerne was leading 2-0 at halftime before going on to a 10-2 win over the Texans with Nick Dunn and Aviv Buchenbacher scoring Wimberley’s two goals.

On Friday, the Texans fell on the road against the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies 1-0. Even though opportunities were available, Wimberley couldn’t capitalize.

“We worked hard, we just couldn’t connect,” Antoun said. “We had three challenges right in front of the goal that we didn’t convert, and they converted a mistake we made into a goal. I feel we were the better team on Friday, we just weren’t efficient and they made us pay for it.”

On Friday, the Texans will play Davenport at home. The varsity starts at 7 p.m. Next week, Wimberley will start the second round of district play.
