A few minutes before halftime, the Lady Texans were looking at a strong lead following three goals by Emily Thames, for what was her third hat trick in the last three games. However, the Boerne Lady Hounds showed their championship pedigree storming back in the second half to take the lead.
With a goal just before and after half time to make the score 3-2, Wimberley still had a lead until the Lady Hounds scored two goals in 90 seconds.
“The (previous Wimberley teams) would have crumbled,” Head Coach Brinton Nute said. “We would have been shell shocked. But you could see with the players, they knew it was time to go.”
Thames received a through ball from Izzy Frank and fought into the box before getting fouled. Izzy Franchione stepped in to kick the penalty kick and put the ball in the bottom left hand corner of the net with her right foot to tie the game up at 4-4.
With two minutes left on the clock, the Lady Texans tried to take back the lead with a late breaking one-on-one score that was called back for being offsides. The game ended in a tie.
“It was a mixture of emotions,” Nute said. “It is always good to take points off of Boerne, because they are a soccer powerhouse on the boys’ and girls’ side. We were pleased, but we also felt we left some points out there… We had the character to tie it up. Disappointing that we couldn’t close the game out but satisfied with the character we showed to come back and tie it up.”
On Friday, Thames streak of hat tricks finally came to an end, but Wimberley was still able to come out on top. Ella Sandoval led the Lady Texans with two goals in a 2-0 win over Fredericksburg.
“It was a very physical game,” Nute said. “The first 20 minutes was back and forth, and then we settled down into the game. We had several challenges that went over the crossbar. It was 0-0 at half. We came on in the second half piling on the pressure.”
Wimberley improved their record to 11-1-3 on the season and 3-0-1 in district play. The Lady Texans played Bandera on Tuesday night after the Wimberley View’s time of press. The next game will be on the road against Davenport, who is tied with Wimberley for first place in district. The game will start at 6 p.m.
