The Wimberley Parks and Recreation Department has officially announced its spring activities for this year at Blue Hole Regional Park.
Many of these activities are part of what the department is calling its 2023 Parks to Communities Initiative. Beginning in February, these include guided hikes, painting, gardening and pickleball.
This spring, Parks and Recreation will be offering a series of guided hikes every first and third Saturday of the month, February through April, at 10 a.m. Participants will become more familiar with the trail system and learn interesting facts about the hiking area. A one-time guided hike on March 7, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., will have a special focus on owls with the opportunity to practice owl calls, dissect an owl pellet and explore the park at night.
Every second Wednesday from February through May, the parks department is offering Painting with the Parks — an opportunity to paint the landscapes of local parks from 9 a.m. to noon. Supplies are available for $25. The painting parties will take place at a slightly different location each time: Feb. 8, Blue Hole Regional Park Swim Lawn; March 8, Recreation Shaded Picnic Area; April 12, Blue Hole Regional Park Fire Pit; and May 10, Martha Knies Community Park.
Another opportunity for painting combines art with plants in the Plant and Paint series. Participants will paint a flowerpot and take home a houseplant of their very own, with a different plant featured every week. This event runs every first Friday of the month, February through May, beginning at 3 p.m.
Every Friday will also include the opportunity for pickleball at the Blue Hole Regional Park Basketball Court from March to May, 8 to 10 a.m. The net and four paddles will be provided free of charge by the Parks and Recreation Department.
Additional, onetime events include the World of Crystals event on Feb. 18 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. where participants will learn about the Texas Hill Country’s unique limestone features, common crystals and minerals and how to identify them. The parks department will also host a Spring Break camp March 13–17, providing students the opportunity to explore topics such as botany, ecology, entomology (the study of insects), geology, herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians), limnology (the study of freshwater ecosystems) and ornithology (the study of birds). The program fee is $200 per camper.
Many of these programs require online registration. To register, or to learn more, contact the Wimberley Parks and Recreation Department at (512) 660-9111 or visit cityofwimberley.com/ parksandrec.
