The state ranked Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies were expected to roll through the Wimberley Lady Texans on Tuesday night in what was expected to be an easy victory for the Billes. However the Lady Texans had other ideas.
Though the Billies got the win, Fredericksburg had to fight tooth and nail against a defiant Lady Texans team in Wimberley’s 72-53 loss.
In a game that was much closer than the score appeared, Wimberley went toe to toe with one of the better programs in the state and at one point had taken the lead against Fredericksburg more than twice.
“It was an unbelievable game,” Hall said. “The girls played hard, and I don’t think they could have played any harder. It was about a 20 point spread, but the game was within 10 to 15 points till the last three minutes of the game when we had to start fouling to gain more possessions. But the girls had a phenomenal effort on the floor. They played physical, aggressive, confident, and did the things we worked on in practice. It was a great game for us and a game we needed.”
“Fredericksburg is ranked No. 2 in the state,” Hall continued. “They are a great ballclub, and tonight we showed that we are a great ballclub too.”
As the Billies held a 11-9 lead, Fredericksburg took control of the game at that moment and pushed the lead to 23-11 in the second quarter.
However the Lady Texans fought back and went on a 11-1 run to cut the lead back down to 24-22.
As the score went to 28-26 with the Billies in the lead, Fredericksburg once again pushed the lead back to double digits at 39-27 as both teams went into halftime.
The third quarter saw Fredericksburg extend the lead to 51-31, but Wimberley crawled their way back into the game in the fourth quarter as the Lady Texans trailed 58-46.
The Billies eventually pushed the lead back out and won 74-53.
Leading the team in scoring was Lily Dela Rosa with 18 points followed by Raygan Pack with 15 points then Brooke Burcham with 9.
Laney Hennessee led the team in rebounds with 11 followed by Pack with 7.
Despite the loss, the Lady Texans needed to bounce back as Wimberley traveled to Davenport to battle the Wolves on Saturday due to the recent winter weather in order to determine out right third place.
Wimberley was back in the win column as the Lady Texans knocked off Davenport 51-42 to clinch a third place finish.
Wimberley’s hopes with a possible second place tiebreak went up in flames as Boerne knocked off Fredericksburg 37-35 to tie the Billies for the district lead.
However, the Lady Texans will be able to play spoiler as Wimberley looks to ruin Boerne’s play for a district title Tuesday night at home in the regular season finale.
