Playing in a game that is moved to another day due to weather can have some unintended consequences.
For the Wimberley Texans boys basketball team, they learned the hard way in their game against Davenport.
Trailing 18-10 in the first quarter and 34-30 in the second quarter, the Texans stormed back to retake the lead in the second half en route to a 74-56 win over the Davenport Wolves.
The win puts the Texans firmly in second place and a shot to tie for the district championship while improving their record to 25-4 overall.
“It’s somewhat of a distraction when you have to play on a Saturday,” Whitten said. “I had warned our guys that it’s going to be a little different and you need to get yourself ready to play. I don’t think we did a great job of that in the first half. They finally got going in the second half and started to get back to more of what we do but it’s just we weren’t playing with a lot of energy and intensity in the first half.”
With the Texans trailing 34-30 heading into the third quarter, Wimberley went on a 10-0 run to take the lead back at 40-34 before extending the lead at 45-38 following a three point play.
Despite Davenport closing the gap at 45-41, the Texans shot forward 52-41 going into the fourth quarter.
The Wolves were unable to cut the lead back down as Wimberley went on to win 74-56.
Leading the team in scoring was Hayes Pounds with 22 points followed by Miles Scheleder with 15 points and Robbie Ritcher with 13.
Pounds also led the team in rebounds with nine followed by Dane Hennessee with eight.
The Texans also pulled off the season sweep as Wimberley won 68-60 over Fredericksburg to give the boys program a rare double sweep of the Battlin’ Billies.
Scheleder led the team in scoring with 19 points followed by Pounds with 17 points.
Wimberley is back in action Tuesday night as the Texans travel to Boerne to win a share of the championship before hosting Canyon Lake.
