Road construction began at the intersection of Ranch Road 12 and Winters Mill Parkway.
According to Hays County Commissioner Lon Shell, Pct. 3, the county will reconstruct the existing intersection and provide several improvements to that section of road.
“The planned work includes road reconstruction, adding a right turn lane from Winters Mill onto RM 12, shoulder improvements, traffic signal improvements, and drainage improvements, which includes culvert extensions,” he said. “At completion, we expect a safer intersection that decreases the number of cars that become backed up in that area.”
Funding for the $476,403 project comes from the Hays County 2016 Road Bonds. The design engineer is Cobb Fendley & Associates, Inc., the Contractor is Lone Star Sitework, LLC, and the Construction, Engineering and Inspection (CEI) firm is Pape-Dawson Engineers.
“The primary improvement is the right hand turn lane from Winter’s Mill on to Ranch Road 12,” Winton Porterfield, planner with the Hays County Transportation Department, said. “If you have an 18-wheeler delivery truck, they have to pull into the lane turning into Wimberley to make that turn. It is really tight.”
Porterfield also said that the shoulders are expanding on Ranch Road 12 on the side of Blue Hole Primary and that the culverts will be extended in the process. Due to the expansion, a new signal pole will be installed. Anticipated completion of the work is later this spring. Traffic impacts are not expected and should be minimal if they occur.
There are also more changes in the works for Winter’s Mill. The county is in the process of designing changes to the Winters Mill Parkway and RM3237 intersection that will eventually include a signal. At this week’s commissioners court meeting, the coun ty received a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to improve pavement markings and dark-sky-compliant lighting for Winters Mill. Porterfield said that those changes will probably occur over the next few years.
