Softball hammers Hawks, baseball bashes Bandera

Weather plays a role in spring sports as do holidays and school breaks. With a shortened week for Good Friday and Easter weekend, last week’s contests at the Wimberley Sports Complex were adjusted to Monday and Thursday. When a cold front moved in late Wednesday, Thursday’s games were moved over to Monday. Both variables, holiday observance and weather, played a part in circumstances.

Softball searches for success in struggles

Wimberley’s Texan softball (1-2 district) closed out the first half of their district season last week. The first half has been difficult as the ladies won the opening district contest versus Canyon Lake in dramatic fashion then falling in the subsequent games to both Bandera and Fredericksburg. They would get an opportunity to draw their record even against Davenport in Garden Ridge last Tuesday.

Tennis advances six to regional tourney

Texan tennis has enjoyed success. They are the reigning state champions in team tennis from this past fall with the Texan’s district producing either the state champion or runner up since as far back as 2015. Last year’s spring state championship in boys doubles was a battle between two Wimberley teams for the second year in a row and the mixed doubles team made it to the final four at the state tournament. Success breeds within the program.

Soccer begins playoffs

The Wimberley High School Texan (11-8-1 overall, 5-5-1 district) and Lady Texan (17-32 overall, 8-3-1 district) soccer teams advanced through district into the UIL playoffs after one of the toughest seasons for both teams in quite a while. The ladies finished third behind Boerne and Davenport High Schools with the guys finishing in fourth, a position secured in the last week of district play.

Lady Texan track gaining momentum

The first few weeks of track season can be difficult for schools like Wimberley. For the most part, coaches from the athletic director to the newest junior high hire share the belief that students in the athletic program should be involved in as many sports as they desire. It also means that seasons overlap and some get a later start getting into “track shape,” getting work on their explosive starts and speed.
